Leading UK society moves to Space Park Leicester ahead of landmark anniversary
The UK’s leading society for remote sensing and photogrammetry has moved to ahead of its 75th anniversary.
The y (RSPSoc) is rebooting its Thematic Research Groups in the run-up to its landmark anniversary in 2027 and has now made the move to Space Park Leicester – the Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s £100 million science and innovation park.
Remote sensing is the process of finding and monitoring an area’s physical characteristics by measuring its reflected and emitted radiation at a distance, often from a satellite or aircraft, and is used to observe Earth and other planets. Photogrammetry is the science of obtaining reliable information about physical objects and the environment.
RSPSoc Head of Membership and Operations, Mark Froud, said: “Moving to Space Park Leicester places us in one of the UK’s hotspots for the key organisations involved in producing and using remote sensing and photogrammetry imaging.
“We’re looking forward to being able to share our members’ cutting edge thinking and developments with organisations already at the Space Park Leicester.”
RSPSoc gives its members opportunities to exploit available technology and to combine their knowledge and skills.
Its activities are relevant to individuals and groups interested in applying remote sensing and photogrammetric data to real world problems, the promotion of remote sensing and photogrammetry education and the development of novel methods for analysing remotely sensed and photogrammetric data. It also supports organisations involved in the development of the commercial market for remote sensing and photogrammetric products and services.
Professor Kevin Tansey of Space Park Leicester and the Â鶹ÊÓƵ’s School of Geography, Geology and The Environment, said: “RSPSoc is an internationally recognised authority on the exciting disciplines of remote sensing and photogrammetry and advances education through facilitating fellowship, research, study and academic excellence.
“I’ve been a member of RSPSoc for many years and I’d encourage everyone, especially PhDs and early-career researchers, to join the society and explore the wealth of benefits it offers.
“We’re thrilled it has joined our collaborative community at Space Park Leicester which is at the forefront of the UK space sector.”
