New Years Honours Professor Paul Boyle and Professor Melanie Davies awarded CBEs

Our President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Boyle, has been appointed a CBE in the New Year’s Honours.

Professor Boyle, who has led Leicester since October 2014, has been recognised for his contribution to social science while Chief Executive of the .

He is joined by Professor Melanie Davies from the Department of Health Sciences who receives a CBE for her services to Diabetes Research.

The Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) is awarded for having a role at national level, or a leading role at regional level, and for a distinguished, innovative contribution to any area.

Professor Boyle said: “This is a tremendous honour which is recognition of the exceptional work done by colleagues at the Economic and Social Research Council.  UK social sciences punch above their weight internationally and the ESRC makes a substantial contribution to this success.â€

Professor Davies was appointed as Professor of Diabetes Medicine in 2007. Working alongside Professor Kamlesh Khunti, Professor Davies has built up the Leicester Diabetes Centre team with more than 140 people currently carrying out over 40 studies designed to improve the lives of people with diabetes. The is recognised across the world for its leading research, education and innovation.

Professor Davies said: “This award means a lot because it is recognition for a significant amount of hard work and determination in turning a vision into reality and I would like to acknowledge the great team with which I am fortunate to work."

Honorary graduate and former member of the University Council Dr Adrian Weston was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for services to the community and charity in Leicestershire.

Leicester alumnus Aatin Ashok Anadkat, founder of local business Hotel Maiyango, Aatin is also a member of the Leicester University Alumni Association.

Criminology graduate David Cowell was for his work on the Melton Learning Hub.
