Division of primary care

About

The Head of the Division of Primary Care is Professor Kamlesh Khunti. Our Division includes academic general practitioners, clinical academics in diabetes medicine and psychiatry and scientists who conduct research in primary care using and developing a range of methodologies.

The Division have attracted multiple awards from NIHR, including funding for a  and two CLAHRCs, ARC, MRC, EU and national health research charities.

Our work has been used as best practice examples by NICE, the Department of Health, the Health and Social Care Information Centre, the NHS Health Checks Programme and the NIHR Primary Care Research Network.

The Division prides itself in the support it offers clinical academic trainees and doctoral students. Members are course directors for the taught courses in the Department.

The Division works closely with the Leicester Centre for Ethnic Health, , NIHR RDS East Midlands and the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research centre. We also work closely with local Clinical Commissioning Groups.

The  Division of Primary Care within the Department of Health Sciences at the Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ has a strong history of carrying out research which has helped shaped the way that primary healthcare is delivered in the UK. The Division represents a collaboration between contributing staff members from a variety of research groups across the university including the  (Diabetes and cardiovascular disease),  (staff members bring a variety of differing yet complementary skills and experience. Key examples of multidisciplinary research which has had national impact includes: re-defining BMI cut points for overweight and obesity in South Asian populations, development, validation and implementation of a risk tool for self-assessing  diabetes risk. Applicants have also supported the development of national guidance for screening and management of type 2 diabetes.
