We know that many of you are facing financial difficulties – including your utility bills, food prices, and transport costs - due to the rising cost of living.

The Â鶹ÊÓƵ, together with the , is committed to supporting our community. Along with existing support, we have taken additional steps to help our all of our students. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students.

Our cost of living hub brings all of this together in one place, to help to make your student experience more affordable. In Leicester was named in the top 10 most cost-effective university locations.

Financial support and advice

  • Our provides information about paid employment, student bank accounts, Disabled Student Allowance, claiming benefits, budgeting calculators, tips on saving money, educational grants and our hardship funds.
  • The Â鶹ÊÓƵ was one of the first universities to match the UK Research and Innovation’s stipend increase for postgraduate researchers. The stipend for the 2023/2024 academic year increased by 5.4% from £17,668 to £18,622.
  • Part time jobs are available through – our official student recruitment agency. You can also apply for roles at other Unitemps branches, even if you are not a student there.
  • Access to our award-winning Careers and Employability Service is available to and Â鶹ÊÓƵ graduates, including support and guidance, as well as access to our online careers platform, My Careers. This gives you 24-hour access to hundreds of internships, graduate vacancies, careers appointments and event bookings. You can also access the in the David Wilson Library between 10.00am and 4.00pm, Monday to Friday in term time, for help with CVs and applying for jobs.
  • Households where everyone’s a full-time student do not have to pay Council Tax. If you do get a bill, you can apply for an exemption. .

Supporting your studies

  • We have plenty warm and safe study spaces for students on campus including in our library (24/7 all year round except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day), Charles Wilson Building (24/7) and Freemen’s Cottages.

  • , during peak times, areas used for social seating during term time cannot be booked for other activities unless it is of direct benefit to students. This is to ensure students have heated seating areas available to study and have some down-time between lectures.

Transport

  • Travel for free between main campus and Oadby (The Village) on the University shuttle bus in term time – just show your University ID. On Wednesday afternoons it also goes to Stoughton Playing Fields so you can cheer on Team Leicester.

  • A  connects the train station, bus station, Leicester Market, Highcross shopping centre, the Leicester Royal Infirmary, and more, operating every 10 minutes, Monday to Saturday, between 8.00am and 6.00pm.

Student life: food and drink

  • Providing more value through an inclusive £3.85 sandwich and wrap meal deal, with more vegan, halal and gluten free options. It is available from all of our main outlets on campus.
  • at Astrovan, Queens, Soul and Wholesome menus, including pizzas by the slice and lower priced loaded fries.
  • Milk alternatives are available in Library Café, Attenborough Café, Freemen’s Kitchen and Bar and ULSB Hub at no extra cost.
  • The , located on floor –1 of the Students’ Union and in the Global Lounge, Charles Wilson Building have fridges, food heating facilities, hot water dispensers and a washing space. The are on a mission to reduce food waste and boost food accessibility on campus. They collect food that campus outlets can no longer sell (due to best before and expiration dates) and deliver these to the Community Kitchen for students to take for free. 

Student life: getting involved

  • Early bird annual gym membership has been kept low at £165.
  • Joining fees for academic societies via the Students’ Union have been removed or subsidised and all academic schools have received additional funding to hold free events.
  • We have lots of free events across campus including our , which is available to all of our students, Let’s Do Leicester sports sessions, and and activities. There are also regular free events in the Global Lounge, the Wellbeing Hub, and the Chaplaincy.
  • has four galleries that provide free exhibitions, discounted student tickets to performances and creative learning, and a range of pay-what-you-can tickets, so you can choose how much you want to or can pay.

Student life: health and wellbeing

  • Free access to our partner wellbeing hotline who offer 24/7 wellbeing support. More information can be found on (log-in required).
  • Our Law School offers a free legal advice clinic, open to the general public.

  • The Students’ Union has dispensers with tampons, sanitary pads and menstrual cups in toilets for students to use for free.

  • Our student led physiotherapy clinic is open to the public, staff and students at reduced rates, giving quick and affordable access to physiotherapy services. Consultations cost £10 per session, with each session lasting around an hour.

Student life: offers and discounts

  • Use the across campus to pay for your food, drink and retail purchases. You earn 5% in loyalty value for every £1 spend – you can then use your loyalty points to pay for food, drink, stationery and clothing.
  • Access hundreds of discounts for big name brands, online and in store, with the .
  • The , in partnership with Santander, is an initiative aimed at helping students focus on their studies. Santander Universities will be giving away ten lots of £1,000 for Â鶹ÊÓƵ students. All students can enter, including undergraduates, postgraduates, part-time and full-time students. The grant aims to provide financial freedom and gives you the flexibility to use the funds where they’re needed most. 

Student life: accommodation

  • Our University managed accommodation has all-inclusive rent which covers all utility bills, high speed Wi-Fi, basic rooms contents insurance (in most properties), lots of organised events and activities, and access to 24 hour support services.
